Tortosa has the most important shopping centre in the Ebro Lands.

It provides visitors with the opportunity of turning purchasing into an art. Tortosa is the most important shopping centre in the Ebro Lands. Its power of attraction reaches the neighbouring regions of the Baix Ebre, Baix Aragó-Matarranya and Castellón’s Maestrat.

The shopping centre is laid out around a main junction, the heart of the city, with a pedestrian island, where all types of businesses can be found. Its main aim is to promote activity and revitalize business. However, the commercial offer has now broadened and new shopping centres have sprung up in the neighbourhoods of Temple and Ferreries.

Its prestige and the large number of shoppers unquestionably prove the quality of the products as well as the range and variety of the merchandise offered by the shopkeepers. If you are looking for a souvenir of Tortosa, local crafts are a very good solution.

Boxwood work, already famous in Arab times, are still available here and in the neighbouring town of Roquetes; there are combs and cooking utensils. The palm, “bargalló” or “margalló”, a thousand year old tradition, are worked on in Els Reguers, Alfara de Carles and Paüls. They produce baskets, saddlebags, etc.

The local veined marble (jasper) is used to make decorative objects, as well as wood, which is cut by renowned woodcarvers.

The pottery production is located at Tivenys, an Iberian-Roman tradition. La Galera and, specially, Miravet are other places nearby where pottery can be found.

There is now a new generation of local craftsmen and women that produce a wide range of decorative objects that can be purchased at shops in the city.

In Tortosa, knitted articles are generally in sober colours, except for red fabric; colours are avoided that do not really correspond to popular tradition.
