The monuments in Tortosa

Suda or Sant Joan castle  
This is cultural heritage of national interest and an impressive architectural testimony of the Andalusian city; it takes its name from the Saracen or suda well that plunges more than 45 metres deep before it reaches the level of the River Ebre. The site has the only outdoor Arabic cemetery in the whole of Catalonia and a state-owned hotel.  [+ more]

The neighbourhood and Santa Clara Monastery
The convent was founded during the lifetime of Santa d'Asís, one of the first from the order to settle in Catalonia and it is the oldest in Tortosa. The monastery is closed but you can visit the cloister. [+ more]

The Municipal Park and the Fish Market
The municipal park has been a busy urban centre since the modernist period and is currently the site of the fish market. [+ more]

The Romeu Portal and the gothic palaces
The Romeu Portal is one of the most emblematic in the walled city, it is the entrance and exit gate to the Sant Jaume de l'Ebre Way. Different palaces are found in the old city. [+ more]

Abaria Palace
It was built as a residential palace and was fortified with a turret at each corner. It dates back to the gothic era, from the 14th and 15th centuries, and was inhabited by the Abarià family, from which it took its name. It is currently the headquarters of the Regional Government for the Ebre Lands of the Autonomous Government of Catalonia. [+ more]

The Puríssima convent 
This building is located in carrer Montcada. It stands out for the very venerated Sant Crist de la Purísima altar. [+ more]

Palace of the General Regional Council 
This is an outstanding  building from the 16th century. Apart from being the headquarters of city representatives of this institution it housed the customs offices that controlled the movement of goods through the city and collected transit taxes for them.  [+ more]

The Campmany Palace
This building has a splendid tiled patio with a neo-Arabic touch and is one of the few palaces in Tortosa where the eaves of the façade have been preserved. [+ more]

The former Santa Creu hospital 
It is currently the site of the Tortosa Courts. The building preserved in its present form dates back to the epoch after the 16th century, as shown by the date on the facade, here you can find the engraved shape of a cross stating its original purpose and name. [+ more]

Sant Joan Monastery
This baroque building is located in Sant Joan square and houses the Occupational Training Centre, the Community Centre of Tortosa and the Art and Design School of the Regional Council of Tarragona. [+ more]

The Franquet Passage

The municipal market (1884-1887)
The Tortosa Market was built in an eclectic style with the participation of Joan Torras i Guardiola, and is known as the 'Catalan Eiffel Tower'. [+ more]

Roser church
This church was designed by the architect Joan Abril and was originally located at another part of the river. [+ more]

Reparació church
This church is located in carrer de la Mercè and on the outside the polychrome stands out of the central dome.  [+ more]

Montagut palace
The palace complex includes the Tamarit portal, one of the medieval gates of Tortosa, through which they moved all the stone blocks from the Cathedral one by one. This historical building has been the headquarters of la Comunitat de Regants de l’Esquerra de l’Ebre since 1982 [+ more]

The municipal slaughterhouse
With its formal richness, it plays with the brick walls and the polychromatic glass ceramics and, along with other public buildings, it shows an interest in embellishing Tortosa of the time. [+ more]

The modernist buildings
The modernist architecture is very closely linked to the urban development. At the end of the 19th century, with the demolition of stretches of wall, expansion began. At this time, bourgeois families, some connected to the most important industries for the city’s economy, built houses there. The two architects who stand out for their work in the city are Pau Monguió and Joan Abril. [+ more]
