Description
Among the cliffs, ravines and rugged landscapes of Els Ports Natural Park lies one of the most distinctive natural passages in this part of the massif. The Forat de l’Aire guided route by Rutes Muntanya is a circular hike through the Caramella ravine, combining scenery, elevation gain and adventure in a spectacular mountain setting.
The route covers 8.6 kilometres, with 982 metres of ascent and descent. Therefore, this is a demanding hike, classified by the operator as difficult. Over approximately five hours, the trail crosses rugged terrain and offers panoramic views over the Caramella ravine and the Ebro Valley.
Forat de l’Aire: a route through cliffs and ravines
The route begins near Casa Carvallo, in the Caramella ravine. From here, the trail gradually gains elevation as it enters one of the most rugged landscapes in Els Ports.
As you climb, the ravine gradually falls away below and new perspectives open up over the rock formations that characterise this part of the massif. In addition, the considerable elevation gain takes hikers from the bottom of the ravine to the higher sections of the route within just a few kilometres.
The route continues towards Mola Castellona. In this way, hikers discover a landscape dominated by limestone walls, cliffs and deep ravines, all characteristic features of the terrain in Els Ports.
The natural passage of the Forat de l’Aire
One of the most distinctive moments of the hike comes at the Forat de l’Aire, which gives the route its name. This natural passage through the rock formations provides a way across this part of the mountain during the descent.
In fact, this feature makes the route particularly appealing to hikers looking for more than a conventional walk. The scenery, elevation changes and nature of the terrain give the itinerary its unmistakably mountainous character.
However, the spectacular nature of the route comes with a considerable level of difficulty. For this reason, its 8.6-kilometre distance should not be interpreted as a short or easy hike. Almost 1,000 metres of ascent make this a physically demanding mountain activity.
The Caramella and views over the Ebro Valley
The Caramella ravine is one of the main features of the route. The contrast between rocky walls, deep ravines and views towards the lower-lying areas reveals the landscape diversity of this part of Els Ports Natural Park.
Moreover, as the trail gains elevation, panoramic views open up across the Ebro Valley. The route therefore combines the feeling of entering a rugged mountain massif with broad views over the surrounding landscape.
Rutes Muntanya also highlights the possibility of spotting wildlife during the hike. Spanish ibex can be encountered in Els Ports. Furthermore, the cliffs and rocky walls provide an excellent setting for observing vultures soaring overhead.
Casa Carvallo, at the entrance to the Caramella
The area around Casa Carvallo provides a reference point at the beginning of the hike. This site is also connected with the history of water use in the Caramella.
Rutes Muntanya associates the house with the engineer Carvallo, who was responsible for works to channel water from the Caramella to Tortosa. In this way, the starting area provides an insight into the historical relationship between the city and the natural resources of Els Ports.
As a result, today’s landscape preserves not only important natural features but also traces of the ways in which people have historically used this territory.
A route for experienced mountain hikers
The combination of distance, elevation gain and terrain makes the Forat de l’Aire a route for people with mountain hiking experience and an appropriate level of physical fitness.
Therefore, hikers should bear in mind that the 982 metres of ascent are concentrated within a route of only 8.6 kilometres. In addition, the itinerary crosses rugged mountain terrain where particular care is required.
Finally, the Forat de l’Aire offers an intense way to discover Els Ports Natural Park. Cliffs, ravines, wildlife, panoramic views and a remarkable natural passage through the rock combine in a hike designed for those seeking a demanding mountain experience.
