Description

Water, rock and mountain scenery are the defining features of this excursion through one of the most distinctive corners of Els Ports Natural Park. The Caramella Pools offer an easy, short guided walk through the Caramella ravine, where natural pools and small waterfalls create a landscape shaped by water.

Covering 2.6 km and lasting approximately 2 hours, the excursion provides an accessible way to explore the area without undertaking a demanding mountain hike. In addition, the natural value of the Caramella is complemented by a fascinating history linked to the use of its water and attempts to channel it to Tortosa.

Caramella Pools: water in Els Ports

The Caramella is one of the places where water plays a particularly important role within the Els Ports massif. Here, the waters of the Racó de la Gralla ravine and the Caramella ravine converge, creating an environment of rock, vegetation and flowing water.

The Caramella Pools can be explored along an easy route. In this way, the walk provides an opportunity to observe how water has shaped the ravine and created different natural formations along its course.

The result is a characteristic Els Ports landscape, where Mediterranean vegetation meets areas strongly influenced by the presence of water.

A route through pools and small waterfalls

A series of natural pools and small waterfalls can be found along the ravine and form one of the main attractions of the route. The Caramella area features several pools as well as a distinctive horsetail-shaped waterfall.

In fact, this succession of water and rock gives the route its particular character. Stops during the excursion provide time to appreciate the scenery and interpret the natural features of this part of Els Ports Natural Park.

However, the Caramella is a Mediterranean natural environment, and water levels can vary depending on rainfall and the time of year. Therefore, the appearance of the pools and waterfalls changes naturally throughout the seasons.

From the Caramella to Tortosa: Carvallo’s legacy

The Caramella also preserves evidence of the historical use of the water resources of Els Ports. In the 19th century, the engineer Carvallo constructed small reservoirs with the aim of channelling water to Tortosa.

These structures add a historical dimension to the excursion. Moreover, they illustrate the long-standing relationship between the city and the Els Ports massif, particularly in the use of its natural resources.

Thus, the route provides an opportunity not only to interpret the landscape as it appears today, but also to discover how people sought to manage and make use of water in this mountain environment.

An easy excursion through the ravine

With a total distance of 2.6 km and an elevation gain and loss of 126 metres, this is an easy route for exploring the Caramella ravine.

The itinerary is linear and takes approximately 2 hours. For this reason, it offers a moderately short mountain experience while introducing visitors to some of the most characteristic features of this part of Els Ports.

The route combines walking with observation of the surrounding environment. As a result, participants can focus on the pools, rock formations, vegetation and traces of the historical use of water.

The Caramella: an ever-changing landscape

One of the distinctive characteristics of the Caramella Pools is that the landscape is directly influenced by water. Rainfall, dry periods and seasonal changes transform the appearance of the ravine throughout the year.

This variability is part of the natural character of Els Ports. Therefore, each visit may reveal a different Caramella, both in terms of water flow and the appearance of its vegetation and pools.

Finally, this excursion offers an accessible way to discover one of the most distinctive water landscapes in the massif, combining nature, mountains and history.
