Ebro Descent to the Mediterranean

Following the course of the Ebro for three days until it reaches the Mediterranean is a different way to discover the region from within the landscape itself. Beniemocions’ Ebro Descent to the Mediterranean is an approximately 104-kilometre kayaking journey from Ascó to Riumar, divided into three stages that reveal how the river and its surroundings gradually change as they approach the Ebro Delta.

Along the way, the Ebro becomes the thread connecting an adventure that passes places such as Móra d’Ebre, Miravet, Benifallet, Xerta, Tortosa, Amposta and Deltebre before reaching Riumar. In addition, the three-day format allows you to experience the river’s transformation gradually, from the inland river landscapes to the wide-open horizons near its mouth.

Ebro Descent to the Mediterranean: a 104 km adventure

Unlike a short kayaking excursion, this experience is a genuine three-day river journey. Each day covers a different distance and landscape, requiring participants to manage their effort and progress at the rhythm of the river.

The route is divided into three stages: 38 km from Ascó to Benifallet, 30 km from Benifallet to Illa dels Bous and 36 km from Illa dels Bous to Riumar.

In this way, the kayak becomes a means of discovering the region. Towns, bridges, riverside vegetation and natural landscapes gradually appear as you travel south along the Ebro.

Stage one: from Ascó to Benifallet

The first day begins in Ascó and finishes in Benifallet, after approximately 38 kilometres of kayaking.

Beniemocions suggests taking advantage of this stage to stop at Móra d’Ebre and Miravet. The journey therefore combines time on the water with opportunities to rest and discover some of the towns that have historically developed along the banks of the Ebro.

The logistics begin in Benifallet, where participants can leave their vehicles for the three days. From there, Beniemocions transports participants and equipment to Ascó to begin the descent.

Moreover, as the first stage finishes back in Benifallet, participants can complete the first day without having to carry all the luggage required for the following stages.

Stage two: from Benifallet to Tortosa and Illa dels Bous

The second day begins in Benifallet and continues for approximately 30 kilometres to Illa dels Bous, downstream from Tortosa.

Suggested stops along this stage include Xerta and Tortosa. Arriving in Tortosa by kayak provides an unusual perspective on the city while following the same natural waterway that played a fundamental role in communication and the transport of goods for centuries.

From the Ebro, Tortosa presents a different image from the one experienced while walking through its streets. The historic riverfront and the city’s bridges become part of the journey before the route continues south.

In fact, this section gradually marks the transition between the landscapes of the Baix Ebre and the increasingly open scenery that signals the approach to the Delta.

Stage three: from Illa dels Bous to Riumar

The third and final day covers approximately 36 kilometres from Illa dels Bous to Riumar, in the Ebro Delta.

The route continues towards Amposta and then on towards Deltebre and Sant Jaume d’Enveja. As the journey progresses, the landscape changes noticeably: the surrounding relief gradually disappears and gives way to the broad, horizontal scenery characteristic of the Delta.

Finally, after three days following the course of the river, the journey reaches Riumar, close to the mouth of the Ebro and the Mediterranean Sea.

Weather conditions can have a particular influence on this final stage. For this reason, Beniemocions recommends considering an early start, especially during the summer, to reduce the possible effects of the garbí or sea breeze during the middle of the day.

Three days following the rhythm of the Ebro

A journey of this length offers an experience of the river that is difficult to achieve on a short excursion. For three days, the Ebro is no longer simply part of the landscape: the river itself becomes the route.

Thus, each stage offers a different perspective. The first crosses the inland river landscapes; the second features Tortosa as one of the highlights of the route; and the third gradually takes participants into the landscapes of the Ebro Delta before reaching Riumar.

Meeting point
Benifallet. Participants can leave their vehicle there for the three days. Beniemocions provides transport to Ascó for the start of the first stage and, at the end of the journey, collection for the return to Benifallet.
