Description
Discover Tortosa from the water and, a few hours later, step into its medieval past. Ebro River Cruise + Templar Tortosa by CONFICON combines two experiences in a single day: a 60-minute cruise along the Ebro aboard the traditional riverboat Lo Sirgador and a guided tour exploring the legacy of the Knights Templar in the city.
The experience begins around midday with the river cruise and continues, after a break for lunch, through the streets of Tortosa. In the afternoon, a guide dressed as a Templar knight leads participants on a route that brings one of the key periods in the city’s medieval history to life. In this way, river landscapes, heritage and history come together in a single day.
Ebro River Cruise + Templar Tortosa: two experiences in one day
The first part of the day is dedicated to the Ebro. For 60 minutes, Lo Sirgador cruises along the river, offering a different perspective of Tortosa from the one you experience in its streets and viewpoints.
The river has been closely linked to Tortosa throughout its history. For centuries, it served as an important route for communication, transport and trade. For this reason, cruising along the Ebro provides a better understanding of the strategic position that Tortosa once held within the surrounding territory.
In addition, seeing Tortosa from the water reveals the close relationship between the city and its river landscape. It is a leisurely introduction to Tortosa before the experience changes completely in the afternoon.
Tortosa from the Ebro
The cruise aboard Lo Sirgador provides time to enjoy the scenery as the boat makes its way along the river. As a result, navigating the Ebro becomes a different way to approach Tortosa and understand the role the river has played in the city’s development.
The combined experience includes a 60-minute river cruise. However, the exact route may vary according to navigation and operating conditions. The focus is therefore on enjoying the river journey and discovering Tortosa from the water rather than following a fixed itinerary.
Once the cruise is over, there is free time before the afternoon activity begins. Lunch is not included, so the break also gives visitors an opportunity to enjoy Tortosa at their own pace.
After lunch, a journey into Templar Tortosa
In the afternoon, the experience continues on foot, with a complete change of period and setting. A Templar knight becomes your guide on a route exploring places connected with the presence of the Order of the Temple in Tortosa.
The Templars played an important role in the city following the Christian conquest of 1148. Ramon Berenguer IV received support from the Order of the Temple during the campaign. Afterwards, the Templars were granted significant possessions in Tortosa and its surrounding territory.
In this way, the tour places the city’s medieval heritage within a period of major political, social and urban transformation.
Following the footsteps of the Templars in Tortosa
The tour is not simply a sequence of historical dates and names. Having the guide dressed as a Templar knight adds an interpretative element that helps bring this period of Tortosa’s history closer to visitors.
As the route progresses, the streets and historic spaces of Tortosa provide the setting for discovering the Templar presence and understanding the medieval city. Moreover, exploring these areas after seeing Tortosa from the Ebro connects two essential aspects of its history: the river as a major communication route and the city as a strategic stronghold.
Finally, this combined experience offers the opportunity to spend much of the day discovering Tortosa from two complementary perspectives: first cruising along the Ebro aboard Lo Sirgador and then exploring the medieval city accompanied by a Templar knight.
