Description

The Terra Alta Baix Ebre Greenway is a cycling experience offered by Rogles along the former Val de Zafán railway line. The route crosses the landscapes of Terra Alta and Baix Ebre and can continue as far as Tortosa, passing through tunnels, viaducts, former railway stations and natural areas.

In addition, the activity offers a choice of different starting and finishing points. This makes it possible to adapt the distance to the time available and the needs of each group. Rogles provides the bicycles and organises return transport, making it easier to complete the route in one direction.

Terra Alta Baix Ebre Greenway

The Terra Alta Baix Ebre Greenway follows the former railway line that was intended to connect inland areas with the Mediterranean coast. Today, this corridor provides an attractive way to explore the region by bicycle.

First, Rogles offers different starting points, including Arnes, Horta de Sant Joan and Bot. From there, cyclists can continue towards El Pinell de Brai, Benifallet and Xerta and, depending on the chosen itinerary, all the way to Tortosa.

A route that adapts to your plans

There is no single distance for this experience. For example, cyclists can choose a route lasting a few hours or spend a full day exploring the Greenway. Longer options can also be arranged for multi-day cycling trips.

Moreover, many of the itineraries offered by Rogles follow the Greenway predominantly downhill. Therefore, participants can choose an option suited to the time available and the type of cycling experience they are looking for.

Tunnels, viaducts and former railway stations

One of the main attractions of the route is its railway heritage. Along the way, cyclists pass through tunnels and across viaducts, as well as alongside former stations that recall the origins of today's Greenway.

At the same time, the landscape gradually changes throughout the journey. The route crosses different areas of Terra Alta and follows the Canaletes River valley before approaching the Ebro valley.

La Fontcalda and the Canaletes valley

One of the highlights along the route is La Fontcalda, beside the Canaletes River. Here, railway heritage is combined with mountain scenery, river landscapes and the small towns and villages of the inland Terres de l'Ebre.

The route can then continue towards El Pinell de Brai, the former Benifallet railway station and Xerta. In this way, the landscape gradually opens out towards the Ebro valley.

Reaching Tortosa along the Greenway

For those choosing a longer itinerary, the experience can continue all the way to Tortosa. On this final section, the Greenway follows the former railway corridor towards the city.

Finally, cyclists entering Tortosa can cross the Ebro via the Red Bridge, a former railway bridge now adapted for cyclists and pedestrians. Completing the route in Tortosa therefore connects the cycling experience directly with the city's heritage and visitor services.

Bicycle hire and return transport

Rogles provides the logistics required for the route. The service includes a bicycle and helmet, together with return transport associated with the selected itinerary.

Before setting off, participants receive an introductory briefing covering safety, basic mechanics and useful information about the route. A repair kit is also provided.

Afterwards, the route can be completed independently. However, Rogles also offers the option of booking a guide to accompany the group during the ride.

A light is required for the tunnels

The Greenway retains numerous tunnels from the former railway line, and some of them are not illuminated. For this reason, Rogles requires cyclists to carry a torch or headlamp.

This item is not included with the equipment provided. Therefore, cyclists should bring one with them before starting the route.
