Tortosa Cathedral guided tour: history and architecture

Santa Maria Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic architecture. Construction of the present cathedral began in 1347 and continued over four centuries. As a result, the building combines architectural features from different periods, ranging from its Gothic structure to its Baroque façade.

One of its most distinctive features is the double ambulatory surrounding the eastern end of the cathedral. In addition, the impressive proportions of the central nave and the ribbed vaults highlight the architectural complexity of the building.

Throughout the tour, the guide explains these features and places them within the wider history of Tortosa.

The Altarpiece of Our Lady of the Star and the Chapel of Our Lady of the Cinta

Among the cathedral's most remarkable artistic treasures is the 14th-century Gothic altarpiece of Our Lady of the Star, which stands at the high altar.

Meanwhile, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Cinta is one of Tortosa's most representative examples of Baroque art. Its rich decoration and materials contrast with the more restrained Gothic architecture of the cathedral.

In this way, visitors can appreciate how different artistic styles coexist within the same historic monument.

The cathedral's permanent exhibition

The Tortosa Cathedral guided tour also includes the permanent exhibition, which houses an important collection of religious and artistic heritage.

Its collections include paintings, sculptures, goldsmithing and silverwork, tapestries and manuscripts that illustrate different periods in the history of the cathedral complex.

Moreover, these objects reveal the cathedral's role as a religious, artistic and cultural centre throughout the centuries.

An experience exploring Tortosa's heritage

This guided experience offers more than an opportunity to admire the cathedral's architecture. Thanks to the guide's explanations, participants can connect its architectural features and artistic treasures with the history of Tortosa.

Finally, the tour highlights the heritage value of a monument that remains an essential part of the city's historical identity.
