Description

The Xiquina Riverside Picnic Area is a rest area on the banks of the River Ebro, behind the Remolins Exhibition Pavilion in Tortosa. Its location provides an opportunity to enjoy a riverside setting very close to the city. In addition, the area is surrounded by vegetation characteristic of the banks of the Ebro.

The site has picnic tables and litter bins, making it a convenient place to stop and enjoy a meal outdoors. Furthermore, its proximity to the river offers visitors a chance to discover one of Tortosa’s natural riverside landscapes.

Xiquina Riverside Picnic Area and the River Ebro

La Xiquina forms part of an environment characterised by riverside vegetation. This vegetation follows the course of the Ebro and contributes to the landscape value of the area. As a result, the picnic area provides a peaceful place to enjoy the riverside landscape without travelling far from the city.

Nearby is Xiquina Island, a river island covering approximately 9.2 hectares that preserves important riverside woodland. Poplar groves and tamarisk vegetation are particularly notable. In fact, the island is included in the Illes de l’Ebre PEIN protected area and the Riberes i Illes de l’Ebre Natura 2000 site.

A riverside landscape in Tortosa

The Xiquina area offers an opportunity to discover the natural character of the Ebro as it flows through the municipality. Its vegetation, river islands and banks form a landscape closely connected to the biodiversity of the river.

In addition, the riverside woodland around Xiquina Island can be seen on river trips along the Ebro from Tortosa.

However, the picnic area should be distinguished from the protected natural environment of Xiquina Island. The picnic area is a resting place beside the river. The island, meanwhile, has its own environmental values and protected status.

A place to enjoy the riverside setting

Thanks to its picnic tables, the area provides a convenient place to rest and eat outdoors beside the river. Therefore, it can be a pleasant additional stop for visitors wishing to discover Tortosa’s riverside landscapes.

Despite the name Xiquina River Beach, the site should not be considered an equipped or supervised bathing area.

Finally, the Xiquina Riverside Picnic Area offers an easy way to experience the Ebro and its riverside vegetation. Its proximity to Tortosa and natural surroundings make it a pleasant place to stop and enjoy the river landscape.
