Description

Cycle between the Ebro Valley and the Mediterranean mountains, pass through small villages and discover places shaped by centuries of history. Bieles de Cardó is a 122-kilometre cycle touring route through the Serra de Boix-Cardó and its surroundings. Combining cycling, landscapes and heritage, it is an adventure designed to be enjoyed over several stages.

With a total elevation gain of 2,630 metres, the route alternates between unpaved tracks and paved roads. Along the way, the scenery constantly changes, from the Ebro and cultivated fields to Mediterranean mountain ranges, ravines and remote trails. In addition, Rutes Muntanya offers different support options, allowing you to focus on cycling and discovering the territory.

Bieles de Cardó: a 122 km cycling adventure

The route is best completed over several stages, with overnight stays in villages or rural accommodation along the way. In this way, the 122 kilometres become a journey through the landscapes of Boix-Cardó rather than simply a sporting challenge.

The terrain combines paved roads and unpaved tracks, with some more demanding sections. Therefore, a suitable level of fitness is recommended, as well as experience of spending several hours on a bicycle.

However, there are several alternatives that allow cyclists to shorten certain sections. This provides some flexibility to adapt the adventure to the abilities and pace of the riders.

Cycling between the Ebro and the Mediterranean

One of the main attractions of Bieles de Cardó is the variety of landscapes encountered throughout the different stages. The Serra de Boix-Cardó rises between the Ebro Valley and the Mediterranean, creating a distinctly Mediterranean mountain landscape.

In some sections, the route takes you through mountains and more arid scenery. In contrast, elsewhere it approaches the Ebro and cultivated farmland. One of the alternatives, for example, allows you to cycle between Tivenys and Bítem, following the river through orange groves.

These contrasts make every day of the route a new discovery. Moreover, travelling by bicycle gives you time to observe how the vegetation, terrain and cultivated landscapes change as you progress.

A landscape shaped by centuries of history

Bieles de Cardó is also an opportunity to discover heritage hidden among the mountains. Throughout the area, traces of the communities that have inhabited this landscape over the centuries can still be found, from prehistoric rock art to ancient roads and paths.

One of the route’s most remarkable landmarks is Cardó, set in a secluded mountain landscape. The complex originated as a monastery and was later transformed into a spa. Its presence is a reminder that these mountains have long been places of travel, settlement, spirituality and use of natural resources.

Therefore, the experience is about much more than covering kilometres. Each stage offers an opportunity to connect the landscape you see today with the stories that have shaped the Serra de Boix-Cardó.

A cycling adventure with support along the way

A multi-day cycling route requires some planning, particularly when it comes to luggage, accommodation and unexpected problems. Rutes Muntanya offers different options to make the logistics easier.

The supported option allows you to travel lighter thanks to luggage transfers between accommodation. It also includes pick-up in the event of problems, a map, GPS track and route description.

In addition, an accompanied option provides assistance points along the route. In this way, you can spend more time enjoying the landscape and visiting places of interest without having to worry about your bicycle.

Finally, Bieles de Cardó offers a different way to explore this part of the Terres de l’Ebre: several days on two wheels, travelling between the Ebro and the mountains while each stage reveals new landscapes, villages and traces of the history of Boix-Cardó.
