Visigothic apse (6th century)
We are standing on the remains of an apsidal building from the Visigothic period. It appears to be a religious building even though it is unclear what it was actually used for. An open area was fashioned to construct it which was overlooked by the building, so it would have been a fairly large structure and might have been part of the first episcopal complex in Dertosa.
Two gold tremises minted by Wittiza, who reigned from 697 to 710, were found inside it. The loss of such valuable coins might suggest an attempt to hide them due to imminent danger, pointing to the capture of the city by Islamic troops in the early 8th century.
