Kayaking from Xerta to Tortosa

Paddling along the Ebro offers a completely different perspective on the river landscape. Kayaking from Xerta to Tortosa with Rogles Aventura follows the river downstream between the two towns, surrounded by riparian woodland, river islands and farmland before reaching the heart of Tortosa by kayak.

The route combines nature, outdoor activity and an opportunity to discover the surrounding landscape. In addition, the scenery gradually changes throughout the journey: from the tranquillity of the Ebro’s natural environment to the arrival in Tortosa, where the city’s bridges and riverfront mark the final stage of a route closely connected to the river.

Kayaking from Xerta to Tortosa: discover the Ebro from the water

The route begins in Xerta, opposite Masos Island, and follows the Ebro downstream. From here, the current accompanies participants past Aldover, Bítem and Jesús before reaching Tortosa.

For much of the journey, the landscape is dominated by farmland and riparian woodland growing along the riverbanks and islands. In this way, kayaking provides a close-up view of an ecosystem that can often remain hidden behind the vegetation when seen from land.

On the horizon, the Els Ports massif accompanies parts of the route, providing a broader perspective over the landscape surrounding the Ebro.

The islands of the Ebro

One of the most distinctive features of the route is the series of river islands encountered along the way. These include Plana Island, Masos Island, Audí Island and Xiquina Island.

The islands form an important part of the river landscape, providing habitats for vegetation and different species of wildlife. Moreover, Xiquina Island, already within Tortosa, is used as a resting area by various bird species.

Thus, the journey provides an opportunity to explore natural areas that form part of the biodiversity of the lower Ebro while continuing downstream towards the city.

From the natural landscape to Tortosa

One of the most memorable aspects of kayaking from Xerta to Tortosa is the gradual change in scenery during the final kilometres.

After paddling among riparian vegetation, islands and farmland, Tortosa begins to appear ahead. Finally, the route enters the city along the Ebro itself and passes beneath its bridges.

Arriving in Tortosa by kayak provides an unusual perspective of the city. For this reason, the final section offers a particularly interesting contrast between the natural landscapes that dominate much of the journey and Tortosa’s urban riverfront.

A route to enjoy at your own pace

The usual duration of the route is between 2 hours and 2 hours 30 minutes, although this may vary depending on the participants’ pace and the flow of the Ebro.

In addition, participants can spend more time observing the surroundings or make stops along the way, which may extend the total duration of the activity.

Rogles offers different types of kayaks, both open and closed, as well as single, double, triple and four-person kayaks. These options make it possible to adapt the experience to different participants and are also suitable for families.

A guided or self-guided experience

Before entering the water, Rogles provides an introductory session on technique, safety and tourist information. Participants therefore receive the essential instructions before beginning the journey.

The activity can be completed as a guided route, accompanied by qualified and experienced instructors, or as a self-guided route under the conditions established by the operator.

For the self-guided option, Rogles also provides a map and waterproof container.

The necessary kayaking equipment, insurance and navigation permit are included. In addition, Rogles provides transport back to the starting point, making the return journey part of the activity’s logistics.

The Ebro as the connecting thread

Kayaking from Xerta to Tortosa provides a direct experience of the relationship between the river and its surrounding landscape. Natural areas, farmland, inhabited areas and routes such as the Val de Zafán Greenway appear along the journey.

At the same time, travelling downstream along the Ebro allows participants to experience the landscape at a different pace and observe how it gradually changes as Tortosa draws closer.

Finally, arriving beneath the city’s bridges completes an experience that combines outdoor activity, nature and a distinctive way to enter Tortosa: from the Ebro itself.
