Description
The Cova Avellanes Recreational Area lies in the heart of Els Ports Natural Park, within the municipality of Tortosa, at an altitude of 1,010 metres. Surrounded by mountain forests, it is an excellent starting point for discovering some of the landscapes of the higher areas of the massif.
To reach the area, the road climbs through the Caragol and passes the Portell viewpoint. From here, there are extensive views over the lower Ebro Valley. In addition, as the road gains altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly wooded, with Eurosiberian vegetation becoming more prominent.
Mountain forests in Els Ports Natural Park
The area is mainly surrounded by pine forests, which provide a habitat for numerous species of flora and fauna. These woodlands are particularly representative of the higher areas of Els Ports.
In fact, the forests in this sector also preserve traces of traditional forestry. Some trails reveal old tracks once used to transport timber, as well as tree stumps that provide evidence of the size of trees that once grew here.
Two trails from Cova Avellanes
Two circular trails signposted by Els Ports Natural Park start from the Cova Avellanes Recreational Area: Pla d’Avària and Marturi.
Pla d’Avària is the easier option. It is 3 km long, with a total elevation gain of 25 metres and an estimated walking time of 1 hour and 30 minutes. The Natural Park classifies it as a low-difficulty route.
Marturi, however, is more demanding. This circular trail is 4.8 km long, with a total elevation gain of 255 metres and an estimated duration of around 2 hours and 20 minutes. It is classified as a medium-difficulty route and passes through pine forests towards the striking rocky ridges of Marturi.
How to reach Cova Avellanes
Access is via Roquetes and Els Reguers along the T-342, followed by the mountain road towards Caro. After the signposted junctions towards Fredes and Cova Avellanes, the final section follows an unpaved track for approximately 3 km. Els Ports Natural Park recommends using a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
For this reason, visitors should check the weather forecast and any current access restrictions or regulations before setting out. Suitable walking footwear, appropriate clothing and sufficient water are also recommended.
Finally, Cova Avellanes combines forests, mountain scenery and hiking in one of the most attractive areas of Els Ports Natural Park. Its proximity to Caro provides further opportunities to explore this part of the massif.
