Els Ports Natural Park

Visit Els Ports Natural Park and discover one of the great natural areas of the Terres de l'Ebre. It forms part of the Els Ports de Tortosa-Beceite massif, a mountainous region covering around 800 km² and linking the Iberian System with the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range. The massif extends across Catalonia, Valencia and Aragon, encompassing areas of the Baix Ebre, Montsià, Terra Alta, Matarraña and Baix Maestrat.

The massif is characterised by rugged limestone landscapes, steep cliffs and deep ravines. Although people have inhabited and shaped these mountains since prehistoric times, they still retain a remarkably wild character. The Natural Park was created in 2001 and protects around 35,000 hectares on the Catalan side. Today, it is one of Catalonia's great natural areas and one of the most distinctive mountain landscapes in the Terres de l'Ebre.

An outstanding natural area for biodiversity

The vegetation of Els Ports is exceptionally diverse. Mediterranean species coexist with plants more typical of cooler and wetter environments. In addition, more than 1,300 species of higher plants and several endemic species have been identified.

One of its most remarkable botanical areas is the Els Ports beech forests, protected as a Partial Nature Reserve. They include some of the southernmost beech forests on the Iberian Peninsula. Another botanical highlight is Pinguicula dertosensis, a small carnivorous plant associated with damp limestone habitats.

The Iberian ibex is the most emblematic animal of Els Ports. In addition, the massif is home to wild boar, roe deer, otters, squirrels and other mammals. Large birds of prey and vultures are particularly noteworthy. Rivers, ravines and springs also provide habitats for a remarkable variety of amphibians, reptiles and aquatic wildlife.

Caro and the mountains of Els Ports

One of the massif's most iconic landmarks is Caro, at 1,441 metres above sea level. It is the highest point in Els Ports and the Terres de l'Ebre. From its viewpoint, visitors can enjoy an extraordinary panorama extending across the Ebro valley, the Delta and, on clear days, the Mediterranean.

The municipality of Tortosa extends deep into the massif. For this reason, visitors can reach an impressive mountain landscape within a relatively short distance of the historic city centre. Highlights within the municipality include El Caragol, with its monument to the Iberian ibex, El Regatxol and Mola de Catí.

Around Roquetes, visitors can discover Caro, Cova Avellanes and facilities dedicated to exploring the massif. In addition, nearby places such as El Toscar, in Alfara de Carles, and Sant Roc, in Paüls, offer further opportunities to explore the landscapes of the Baix Ebre.

Hiking is one of the best ways to visit Els Ports Natural Park. An extensive network of marked trails provides access to forests, ravines, cliffs, springs and viewpoints. Long-distance trails also cross the massif, while its rugged terrain provides opportunities for activities such as caving and climbing.

Moreover, the vast size of Els Ports makes it possible to explore several different areas. In the Terra Alta, highlights include La Fontcalda, La Franqueta, Els Estrets d'Arnes and the surroundings of Horta de Sant Joan. Towards the Matarraña, the landscape continues to the Parrissal de Beceite, the Pena reservoir and the spectacular Rocas del Masmut, near Peñarroya de Tastavins.

From Montsià to Tinença de Benifassà

The southern part of the massif offers a different perspective on Els Ports. For example, Mas de Barberans combines panoramic views with the traditional craft of working with palm leaves.

Around la Sénia, natural highlights include the Fou ravine and El Retaule. Then, towards the Tinença de Benifassà, the route can continue to the Sant Pere springs, Cova dels Rosegadors, the Ulldecona reservoir and La Pobla de Benifassà, with its historic monastery.
