Ulldemó Gorges or Regatxol Gorges

The Ulldemó Gorges, also known as the Regatxol Gorges, form one of the most spectacular landscapes in Els Ports Natural Park. Part of this area lies within the municipality of Tortosa, at the headwaters of the Ulldemó River, surrounded by impressive limestone formations shaped by the action of water.

Watercourses have carved deeply into the terrain, creating gorges, narrow passages and pools enclosed by rock. In fact, Els Ports Natural Park identifies the Regatxol Gorges as one of the most spectacular examples of river-cut gorges in the western part of the massif.

A spectacular gorge in Els Ports Natural Park

The Ulldemó Gorges offer a striking example of the relationship between the limestone geology of Els Ports and water erosion. Rocky walls, narrow passages and distinctive pinnacles created by karst erosion shape a rugged and monumental landscape.

In addition, one of the most impressive features is a vast gorge known locally and among canyoning enthusiasts as the Catedral dels Ports (Cathedral of Els Ports). In this section, the technical canyoning descent includes an abseil of around 55 metres.

Water and the shapes of the landscape

Water is one of the defining features of this natural setting. Its action on the limestone has formed pools and narrow passages enclosed by large masses of rock. Indeed, these narrow gorges are locally known by the Catalan term gúbies.

As a result, the combination of water and rock makes the headwaters of the Ulldemó an area of considerable geological and scenic interest within Els Ports Natural Park.

Hiking and canyoning in the Ulldemó Gorges

However, it is important to distinguish hiking in the surrounding area from the technical canyoning descent of the Regatxol Gorges. The FEEC (Federation of Hiking and Mountaineering Organisations of Catalonia) classifies the canyon as a technical route with six abseils, the longest reaching 55 metres. Therefore, completing the descent requires suitable equipment, experience and specific technical knowledge and should not be considered a conventional hiking route.

For this reason, before undertaking any activity in the area, visitors should check the weather as well as the current conditions and regulations of the Natural Park.

Access to the Regatxol Gorges

Motor vehicle access is regulated by Els Ports Natural Park. Currently, the Regatxol track is open to motor vehicles only from 15 October to 1 December. Since these regulations may change, visitors should always check the latest official information before travelling to the area.

Finally, the Ulldemó Gorges are an exceptional example of the natural heritage associated with the municipality of Tortosa. Gorges, pools, rocky pinnacles and limestone formations reveal one of the most rugged and spectacular landscapes of Els Ports.
