PSTD Tortosa, the past is an adventure

A strategic project to strengthen Tortosa as a sustainable, innovative and competitive tourist destination, enhancing its heritage, improving itineraries and modernising the visitor experience.
The PSTD forms part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan funded by the Next Generation EU funds and has a total budget of €2,000,000.

Strategic pillars
Pillar 1. Green and sustainable transition
Action 1. Green Belt – Definition of rest areas and park-and-ride facilities
What we will do: We will create park-and-ride areas and rest spaces with services and information (routes, water points, shade, benches, bicycle parking and selective waste collection).
What it is for: To organise access to points of interest, facilitate intermodality and make it easier to move comfortably between different sites.
Action 2. Green Belt – Environmental integration of linear infrastructure
What we will do: We will improve the environmental integration of the Green Belt’s linear route to make it more coherent, functional and attractive as a pathway.
What it is for: To strengthen a continuous itinerary that connects key assets and promotes active mobility.
Action 3. Green Belt – Environmental restoration of the Fortí de Bonete surroundings
What we will do: We will carry out environmental restoration actions around the Fortí de Bonete to enhance its ecological and landscape quality.
What it is for: To increase the value of the surroundings and enhance the appeal of heritage-related routes.
Action 4. Green Belt – Environmental restoration of the Portal de Tarragona surroundings
What we will do: We will implement environmental and landscape restoration in the area surrounding the Portal de Tarragona.
What it is for: To improve the perception and quality of a key access and connection point within the itineraries.
Action 5. Green Belt – Environmental restoration of the Orleans fortification surroundings
What we will do: We will carry out environmental restoration actions around the Orleans fortification.
What it is for: To enhance the attractiveness of the route and better integrate the heritage with the natural environment.
Pillar 2. Improved energy efficiency
Action 1. Green Belt – Creation of cycling infrastructure
What we will do: We will develop infrastructure linked to a cycling route associated with the Green Belt.
What it is for: To facilitate sustainable travel, promote cycle tourism and improve connectivity between points of interest.
Action 2. Green Carrilet – Electric tourist train
What we will do: We will introduce an electric tourist train as a mobility option for visitors.
What it is for: To improve accessibility and reduce the environmental impact of tourist transport.
Action 3. Green Belt lighting
What we will do: We will improve the lighting along the Green Belt.
What it is for: To increase safety and comfort of use and make the route more accessible and usable.
Pillar 3. Digital transition
Action 1. Phase two of the signage plan
What we will do: We will roll out the second phase of the tourist signage system.
What it is for: To facilitate orientation, manage visitor flows and enhance the discovery of key assets.
Action 2. Mentoring for tourism businesses in digital transition and innovation
What we will do: We will provide expert support to analyse needs and define a digital action plan for participating businesses.
What it is for: To modernise the local sector and drive improvements and new technology-based products.
Action 3. Interactive mystery game for mobile devices
What we will do: We will develop an interactive mobile game linked to the visitor experience.
What it is for: To gamify the experience and attract family and younger audiences.
Action 4. Automated visitor counting system
What we will do: We will implement an automated system to monitor visitor numbers.
What it is for: To obtain management data and improve flow planning.
Action 5. Geocaching route across the fortifications
What we will do: We will design a geocaching route linked to the fortifications.
What it is for: To encourage active and engaging exploration of the heritage.
Action 6. Interactive audiovisual installations at the Renaissance Interpretation Centre
What we will do: We will incorporate interactive audiovisual installations at the centre.
What it is for: To update interpretation formats and enhance the visitor experience.
Pillar 4. Competitiveness
Action 1. Interpretation of the Avançades de Sant Joan
What we will do: We will implement an open-air interpretation with physical supports and digital resources (e.g. QR codes).
What it is for: To facilitate self-guided visits and make the fortified complex easier to understand.
Action 2. Interpretation of the Fortí d’Orleans
What we will do: We will develop an interpretative proposal for the fort and its historical context.
What it is for: To complete the narrative of the fortified system and enrich the visitor route.
Action 3. Training and support for the creation of tourism products
What we will do: We will promote training and provide support so that stakeholders and businesses can turn the initiatives into products and experiences.
What it is for: To increase commercialisation and generate a positive impact on the local sector.
Action 4. Gastronomic promotion plan for Tortosa
What we will do: We will develop an action plan to strengthen gastronomy as a key driver of tourism.
What it is for: To diversify reasons to visit and reinforce the destination’s positioning.
