The Tabernae (1st century)

These were a kind of shop or stall on the ground floor of Roman houses and buildings. They sold staple consumer products such as wine and oil along with other goods and services. The tabernae in Tortosa were probably built around 90-100 CE. Significantly altered due to the construction of the city walls, the tabernae were rebuilt during the 5th century.

Here you can see the front of a taberna and its door. Over time the door was bricked up and in 6th century the former taberna became a structural part of new buildings.
