Description
The Font Nova Recreational Area is located in Els Ports Natural Park, within the municipality of Alfara de Carles, at an altitude of around 400 metres. Traditionally, Font Nova was used as a watering place for livestock. As a result, the surrounding landscape still preserves traces of traditional mountain life, including livestock enclosures, farmhouses and dry-stone walls.
This landscape offers an opportunity to discover an area of Els Ports closely linked to centuries of human activity. In addition, its location provides sweeping views over the Ebro Valley and the mountains surrounding Alfara de Carles.
Three trails from the Font Nova Recreational Area
Three circular trails proposed by Els Ports Natural Park start from the Font Nova Recreational Area: La Moleta, Vall d’Infern and Les Fonts. All three begin and end at the recreational area.
The La Moleta trail is 5.8 km long, with 460 metres of elevation gain and an estimated duration of around 2 hours. It is classified as a medium-difficulty route and climbs to viewpoints offering extensive panoramas over the Ebro Valley.
Meanwhile, the Vall d’Infern trail explores one of the most characteristic areas around Font Nova. It is 5.4 km long, with around 400 metres of elevation gain and an estimated duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. Els Ports Natural Park classifies it as a low-difficulty route.
Finally, the Les Fonts trail is a 4.9 km circular route, with 140 metres of elevation gain and an estimated duration of around 1 hour and 30 minutes. It is also classified as low difficulty and provides an opportunity to discover several springs and environments shaped by the presence of water.
A landscape shaped by traditional activities
Exploring this area reveals the relationship between the natural landscape and the activities practised in Els Ports over generations. In fact, livestock enclosures, farmhouses and dry-stone structures bear witness to the traditional pastoral and agricultural use of this territory.
As a result, Font Nova combines hiking, rural heritage and mountain scenery. It is an interesting place to discover another side of Els Ports Natural Park.
How to reach Font Nova
Access is from Roquetes along the T-342 towards Alfara de Carles. After passing Els Reguers, continue to the Xerta-Càlig canal and follow the signs towards Llac d’Aussera – Font Nova. From there, a track of approximately 3.5 km leads to the recreational area.
Visitors should be aware that the recreational area and all three trails were affected by the forest fire of July 2025. Part of the trail signage was also damaged. Therefore, before following any of these routes, it is important to check their current condition and follow the latest guidance from Els Ports Natural Park.
In addition, visitors should check the weather forecast, carry sufficient water, wear suitable clothing and footwear, and check for the possible presence of bulls in the area.
