Description
The Former Aldover Railway Station is one of the historic railway facilities restored along the Val de Zafán Greenway. It is located a short distance from the centre of Aldover, in the Baix Ebre. Today, it provides a convenient stopping point for cyclists, walkers and other visitors exploring this former railway corridor.
The former passenger building has been restored and currently houses a restaurant and grill. In addition, the area around the station has recreational and picnic facilities. Therefore, it is a pleasant place to stop during a journey along the Greenway.
Former Aldover Railway Station and the Val de Zafán line
The history of the station is closely linked to the Val de Zafán railway, which connected Aragon with the Baix Ebre. The passenger building at Aldover station dates from 1920. However, the complete railway line to Tortosa did not enter service until the 1940s.
Rail services ceased in 1973. Subsequently, the former railway line was gradually converted for recreational and tourism purposes. As a result, it eventually became part of the present-day Val de Zafán Greenway Natural Trail.
Thus, infrastructure originally designed for rail transport has acquired a new purpose. Today, the route is one of the characteristic cycling and walking itineraries of the Terres de l’Ebre.
A stop along the Greenway
The station stands directly beside the Greenway and very close to the village of Aldover. For this reason, it is a convenient place to combine the route with a visit to the village. It is also a good spot to rest before continuing the journey.
In this section, the Greenway runs between Tortosa, Aldover, Xerta and Benifallet. Much of the route follows the former railway trackbed. In addition, between Xerta and Aldover there are two underpasses that allow users to cross the road safely.
Furthermore, restoring the station has preserved a visible reminder of the former railway. At the same time, the site has acquired a new role linked to active tourism.
Recreational area and restaurant
Around the station building there are picnic tables and a recreational area for Greenway users. Furthermore, bicycle parking is also available.
The former passenger building houses the Braseria Via Verda Aldover, with indoor spaces and terraces. Therefore, the station provides services for people travelling along the Greenway. It also welcomes visitors arriving from Aldover and other nearby towns and villages.
Finally, the former station is a good example of the reuse of railway heritage. The historic building and the Greenway preserve the memory of the Val de Zafán railway. At the same time, the recreational facilities make it an attractive stopping point for discovering the landscape of the Baix Ebre.
