Description

The Former Benifallet Railway Station is one of the most distinctive landmarks along the Val de Zafán Greenway as it passes through the Terres de l’Ebre. Located within the municipality of Benifallet and surrounded by nature, the former railway station has been restored. Today, it combines its railway heritage with accommodation and dining services for visitors and Greenway users.

Its secluded location, away from the town centre and surrounded by woodland, preserves the atmosphere of a railway station set in the heart of nature. In addition, it is an ideal place to stop while exploring the route on foot or by bicycle.

Former Benifallet Railway Station and the Val de Zafán line

The history of the station is closely linked to the Val de Zafán railway, which was conceived to connect Aragon with the Terres de l’Ebre. Construction of the line was a long and complex process. Eventually, trains operated through this area for much of the 20th century.

The railway closed permanently on 17 September 1973. Over time, much of the former railway line was converted into a greenway for cycling and walking. As a result, tunnels, viaducts and former stations acquired a new role linked to active tourism.

A stop along the Val de Zafán Greenway

The station is one of the most characteristic landmarks along the Greenway in the Baix Ebre. In this region, the route connects Tortosa and Benifallet, passing through Roquetes, Jesús, Aldover and Xerta. From Benifallet, the route continues towards the Terra Alta and Aragon.

In addition, the former railway line passes through mountain landscapes and numerous examples of historic railway infrastructure. The station is therefore an excellent place to rest and a useful base from which to explore different sections of the route.

From Tortosa, the route is directly connected with the Red Bridge and the Greenway, where the city joins the former railway corridor.

Accommodation and dining

Today, the former railway station operates as a tourist establishment. It offers accommodation and a restaurant, with guesthouse and hostel options housed in buildings formerly associated with railway operations.

In fact, this new use helps preserve part of the heritage of the former railway while providing services for cyclists, walkers and other visitors. Local cuisine and locally sourced products also form part of the establishment’s offering.

For current information about availability and services, visitors can consult the official Benifallet Station website.

How to reach the station

The station lies on the opposite side of the River Ebro from the town of Benifallet, directly beside the Greenway. Therefore, it can also be reached directly from the route by visitors travelling on foot or by bicycle.

Finally, this setting brings together cycling, walking, landscape and railway heritage. The restoration of the former railway buildings has given the complex a new lease of life while helping to preserve the legacy of the Val de Zafán railway in the Baix Ebre.
