Description
The DO Terra Alta wine tasting at the Parador de Tortosa is a wine and gastronomy experience that invites visitors to discover the wines, grape varieties and winemaking traditions of this region in the Terres de l'Ebre. Combining wine culture, local gastronomy and an introduction to the surrounding landscape, the activity takes place in a remarkable historic setting.
Held at the Parador de Tortosa, within the grounds of La Suda Castle, the tasting is led by Maite Ruiz Arasa, a winemaker and food journalist from Tortosa. During the session, participants sample four different wines from the Terra Alta Designation of Origin (DO), accompanied by a light appetiser.
DO Terra Alta wine tasting: four wines to discover the region
The DO Terra Alta wine tasting introduces participants to the distinctive characteristics of wines produced in this designated wine-growing area, located inland in the Terres de l'Ebre.
Throughout the experience, Maite Ruiz Arasa guides participants through the world of wine, explaining the different grape varieties, winemaking processes and the region's viticultural identity.
Furthermore, tasting four different wines provides an opportunity to appreciate a range of aromas, flavours and characteristics. In this way, the activity combines sensory discovery with an introduction to Terra Alta's wine culture.
White Grenache and Terra Alta's winemaking heritage
The Terra Alta Designation of Origin covers twelve municipalities and is particularly renowned for its white wines.
Among its most representative grape varieties are White Grenache (Garnatxa Blanca) and Macabeo. White Grenache, in particular, plays a central role in the region's winemaking identity, reflecting a long tradition of grape cultivation and wine production.
Terra Alta also preserves the traditional production of skin-contact white wines, locally known as vins brisats. These are made by fermenting white grape must in contact with the grape skins, using a process similar to that employed in red winemaking.
In addition, the region produces red, rosé and sweet wines, as well as mistela, contributing to the diversity of its wine heritage.
A wine and gastronomy experience at the Parador de Tortosa
The tasting takes place in a reserved area of the Parador de Tortosa's main dining room, offering a relaxed setting in which to discover and appreciate the wines.
Over approximately an hour and a half, participants explore the relationship between grape varieties, wine styles and their region of origin.
A light appetiser is also served between the wines, complementing the tasting experience.
As a result, this activity offers an opportunity to discover Terra Alta's winemaking heritage without leaving Tortosa, in a hotel located within one of the city's most emblematic historic landmarks.
