The Prince’s Gardens, an open-air sculpture museum

The Prince's Gardens in Tortosa are the perfect place to slow down and enjoy a peaceful break from the city's lively streets. Nestled at the foot of La Suda Castle, they combine landscaped gardens, heritage and contemporary art in a tranquil setting, home to one of Catalonia's most distinctive open-air sculpture collections.

As you stroll through the gardens, you'll discover twenty-three sculptural groups created by the contemporary artist Santiago de Santiago. Displayed among trees, pathways and landscaped areas, the sculptures follow the theme "Humanity, Its Motivation and Its Destiny." The collection takes visitors on a journey through the history of humankind, from prehistoric times to the conquest of space, exploring myths, major achievements and defining moments of the modern world.

At the heart of the gardens stands The Struggle of Humanity, a monumental sculpture composed of intertwined human figures that symbolises effort, perseverance and the destiny of humankind. It is the central piece of the collection and the highlight of the visit.

The gardens occupy the site of the former Porcar Spa, which flourished during the 19th century thanks to the medicinal qualities of its waters. In 1883, Porcar i Tió expanded and modernised the spa after confirming the therapeutic properties of the springs. Later, between 1942 and 1970, the site was occupied by a community of Salesian sisters.

After the site was acquired by Tortosa City Council, a restoration project began in 1989 to transform the former gardens into an open-air sculpture museum, following a proposal by the José Celma Prieto Foundation. The gardens were officially inaugurated in 1991 by Felipe de Borbón, from whom they take their present name.

A visit to the Prince's Gardens offers a different way to experience Tortosa. Surrounded by sculptures, greenery and medieval walls, this unique space brings together contemporary art, history and landscape at the foot of La Suda Castle.
