Description
The Former Xerta Railway Station is one of the main service points along the Val de Zafán Greenway in the Baix Ebre. Located very close to the centre of Xerta, it occupies facilities belonging to the former railway line, now converted into a route for cyclists and walkers.
Today, the site combines railway heritage with active tourism services and recreational facilities. In addition, the former passenger building houses the Xerta River Interpretation Centre, which explores the historical relationship between the town, the River Ebro and the different uses of water.
Former Xerta Railway Station and the Val de Zafán line
The history of the station is closely linked to the Val de Zafán railway, an infrastructure designed to connect Aragon with the Terres de l’Ebre. The railway section to Tortosa was completed in 1942, and the line operated for 31 years. Finally, rail services ceased permanently on 17 September 1973.
Over time, the former railway track was transformed into the present-day Greenway. As a result, the old railway infrastructure has acquired new uses linked to cycling, walking and exploring the surrounding area.
Xerta River Interpretation Centre
Since 2011, the former passenger building has housed the Xerta River Interpretation Centre. Its exhibition explores the development of the town and the different historical uses of water. In addition, it explains Xerta’s relationship with the River Ebro and provides an introduction to the Xerta Weir and its historical importance.
The centre is arranged over two floors. On the upper floor, there is a projection room showing an audiovisual presentation about the history of Xerta. Admission is currently free, and advance booking is required, according to information published by Xerta Town Council.
Greenway and active tourism
The station also serves as a base for exploring the Val de Zafán Greenway. Services include bicycle and e-bike hire, as well as transport for cyclists and bicycles. Kayaking activities on the River Ebro can also be arranged.
In fact, Xerta’s location makes it easy to combine a journey along the Greenway with activities on the river. Routes from the station connect different locations in the Terra Alta and Baix Ebre. Furthermore, they offer the opportunity to discover old tunnels, viaducts and other features of the former railway line.
A convenient stop with visitor facilities
Outside the station there is a tree-lined recreational area with picnic facilities, tables, benches, a fountain and a children’s play area. In addition, the site has a large parking area. The station also offers a café terrace and a local produce shop, featuring products from the Terres de l’Ebre.
Finally, the former station combines railway heritage, interpretation of the local area and active tourism. Therefore, it is an excellent place to start or finish a journey along the Greenway. At the same time, it provides an opportunity to discover Xerta’s close historical relationship with the River Ebro.
