Description

Set off from Tortosa by kayak and follow the Ebro downstream to Amposta for a completely different perspective on the river. Kayaking from Tortosa to Amposta with Rogles Aventura connects the two main cities of the Catalan Ebro on a journey lasting between two and a half and just over three hours, passing beneath bridges and alongside river islands and riverside landscapes.

Along this stretch, the Ebro is wide and calm, with very little noticeable current to help you along. Therefore, the route requires a steady paddling rhythm as Tortosa’s urban landscape gradually recedes behind you. Little by little, the river takes centre stage until you reach Amposta, where its iconic Suspension Bridge marks the final part of the experience.

Kayaking from Tortosa to Amposta: two cities connected by the Ebro

The journey begins in Tortosa, a city whose history and development have been closely linked to the river for centuries. Seen from a kayak, the Ebro is no longer simply part of the cityscape: it becomes the route that guides the entire experience.

Shortly after setting off, you paddle beneath the Mil·lenari Bridge. From here, Tortosa gradually disappears behind you and the surroundings begin to change. In this way, the journey reveals the transition from the urban landscape to the riverside and agricultural scenery characteristic of the lower Ebro.

The complete route passes beneath four bridges. In addition, travelling at water level provides a very different view of the landscape from the one you experience from the road or riverside paths.

Islands, vegetation and riverside landscapes

As you continue downstream, vegetation becomes increasingly prominent. One of the most interesting places along the route is Illa dels Bous, a protected natural area that forms part of the Ebro’s river landscape.

Rogles recommends passing the island along the narrower channel. In this way, you can paddle through a more secluded stretch of river surrounded by riverside vegetation.

Further downstream, the route reaches the area around La Carrova. This part of the journey recalls the historical importance of the Ebro as both a communication route and a strategic corridor. On opposite sides of the river stand the Carrova Tower and the Campredó Tower, also known as Font de Quinto Tower, historically associated with controlling this river passage. However, vegetation now makes the Carrova Tower difficult to see from the river.

Arriving in Amposta from the river

The route continues beneath the railway and motorway bridges. Meanwhile, every paddle stroke brings Amposta a little closer.

The approach to the city provides one of the most recognisable moments of the journey. The Amposta Suspension Bridge, one of the city’s best-known landmarks, gradually comes into view. Finally, after several hours following the Ebro downstream, the route finishes near the marina.

Arriving in Amposta from the water offers an unusual perspective on the city. In fact, after leaving Tortosa behind by river, the Suspension Bridge feels almost like a gateway announcing the end of the journey.

A calm route that requires steady paddling

The calm character of the Ebro along this stretch does not mean that the route is effortless. As the current is barely noticeable, participants need to paddle for much of the journey.

The activity lasts approximately 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes, depending on paddling speed. For this reason, a reasonable level of fitness is recommended so that you can paddle comfortably for the duration of the route.

Before setting off, Rogles provides an introductory session covering paddling technique, safety and interpretation of the area. In addition, single, double, triple and four-person kayaks are available to suit different participants, including families.

The return journey is also taken care of. Once the descent is complete, the service includes transport back to the starting point. Therefore, you can simply focus on paddling and enjoying the Ebro.
