The Former Hospital of the Holy Cross is one of the finest examples of 18th-century civic architecture in Tortosa. It stands at the end of Mercè Street, in Estudis Square, very close to the Royal Colleges. Its monumental façade reflects the different roles this site has played over the centuries.

The history of the site dates back to the early 14th century. It was once home to the former Grammar School, one of Tortosa’s earliest educational institutions. This educational past is still reflected in the name Estudis Square.
In the 1760s, the earlier building was replaced by the new Hospital of the Holy Cross. The institution succeeded the medieval hospital that had stood outside the city walls.
In addition to providing healthcare, the building acted as a retaining wall against floodwater from the adjacent ravine. In this way, it also contributed to the protection and organisation of this part of the city.
A monumental façade in Estudis Square
The façade is the main heritage feature of the Former Hospital of the Holy Cross that can be appreciated from outside. Its imposing architraved entrance with rusticated stonework reinforces the monumental character of the building.
Above the entrance is an inscription recalling the charitable purpose of the former hospital. The composition also features sculptures by the Aragonese artist Francisco del Condado. In addition, two stone-carved coats of arms of Tortosa can be seen at either end of the façade.
Thus, the exterior provides an excellent example of the restrained civic architecture of the 18th century. The monumental entrance also reflects the institutional importance once held by the building.
From hospital to institutional headquarters
Over time, the building ceased to function as a hospital and took on new roles. Between 1914 and the 1940s, it housed Tortosa City Council.
Today, the building houses the courts and does not operate as a tourist attraction. Therefore, visitors can appreciate its heritage primarily through the façade and the architectural features visible from Estudis Square.
