Lamote de Grignon House is one of the most distinguished Modernist buildings in the historic centre of Tortosa. Located at the junction of Montcada Street and Àngel Street, in the heart of the city's commercial district, this elegant building combines outstanding architectural quality with a history closely linked to Tortosa's social and economic life throughout the twentieth century.
Designed in 1911 by the architect Josep Maria Vaquer i Urquizú, the house is an excellent example of Tortosa's Modernist architecture. Its façade is richly decorated with floral motifs inspired by nature, reflecting the elegance, creativity and artistic refinement that characterise the Catalan Modernist movement. Flowing lines, elaborate ornamental details and a carefully balanced composition give the building a distinctive and harmonious appearance.
The building blends naturally into the historic streetscape of Montcada Street, one of Tortosa's most significant thoroughfares, where architecture from different periods illustrates the city's urban evolution. In 1912, just one year after its completion, the building became home to the Hotel and Inn Siboni, which quickly earned a reputation as one of Tortosa's most prestigious establishments. Renowned for its refined cuisine, elegant interiors and sophisticated decoration, the hotel soon became a favourite meeting place for local society. For decades, it hosted family celebrations, official banquets, business meetings and social gatherings, playing an important role in the city's cultural and commercial life.
The Hotel Siboni retained its prestige throughout much of the twentieth century before closing permanently towards the end of the century. Although the hotel is no longer operating, the building still recalls an era when hospitality and fine dining were at the heart of Tortosa's social life.
Lamote de Grignon House has been designated a Local Cultural Heritage Asset (BCIL – Bé Cultural d'Interès Local), recognising its architectural and historical significance. This protected status specifically safeguards the building's façade and its impressive main staircase, ensuring the preservation of some of its most valuable architectural features.
Today, Lamote de Grignon House remains one of Tortosa's most important Modernist landmarks. The beauty of its façade, its close association with the historic Hotel Siboni and its prominent location in the city centre make it an essential part of Tortosa's architectural heritage.
