The architectural design was created by Joan Abril, while the technical solution for its spectacular metal structure was developed by Joan Torras i Guardiola, an engineer and architect popularly known as the “Catalan Eiffel”.
The building is particularly striking for its large rectangular hall. This design differs from other market buildings of the period and creates a spacious, open and light-filled interior. Above all, the roof stands out. It is supported by fourteen large laminated iron trusses with a parabolic profile. As a result, the building is a remarkable example of iron architecture and 19th-century Catalan engineering.
A façade full of architectural details
The exterior of the market also deserves a closer look. Exposed brickwork, battlements and monumental entrances give the building its distinctive appearance. Together, these features reflect different architectural influences characteristic of the late 19th century.
In addition, one of the façades displays Tortosa’s coat of arms alongside the inscription CIVITAS DERTUSAE FIDELISSIMA ET EXEMPLARIS – 1886. These decorative elements add character to a building that has been part of Tortosa’s urban landscape and commercial life for more than a century.
