Teodor Gonzàlez Municipal Park is Tortosa’s main green space and one of the city’s most emblematic public areas. Located between Generalitat Avenue and the River Ebro, it combines historic gardens, monumental trees, Modernist architecture and medieval heritage. In addition, at its northern end stands the Medieval Market Hall, now home to the House of the Giants.
Teodor Gonzàlez Municipal Park: Tortosa’s great urban garden
The park was created as part of Tortosa’s urban expansion in the late 19th century, following the demolition of the old city walls. In this context, the project by municipal architect Joan Abril i Guanyabens provided the city with a large green space in one of its developing areas.
Its design was inspired by Romantic gardens. A broad central promenade lined with century-old plane trees forms the backbone of the park. Around it, winding paths, landscaped areas, ponds, stairways and shaded corners create a pleasant setting for walking and relaxing.
Moreover, the park’s botanical diversity is one of its main attractions. Native species grow alongside trees and plants from other parts of the world. As a result, the park is both a remarkable urban garden and a popular meeting place in the heart of Tortosa.
Pau Monguió’s Modernist pergola
One of the park’s most distinctive features is the stairway with a Modernist pergola, designed by architect Pau Monguió i Segura and built in 1921.
The flowing forms of the railings, benches decorated with trencadís mosaic and stone finishes create a composition that blends harmoniously with the surrounding vegetation. At the same time, the ensemble is one of the most interesting examples of Modernist architecture in Tortosa and adds significant architectural value to the park.
Furthermore, the combination of this architectural heritage with monumental trees and historic gardens reveals a different side of Modernism in Tortosa, closely connected with public space and the urban landscape.
Tortosa’s Medieval Market Hall
At the northern end of the park stands the Medieval Market Hall, an important reminder of Tortosa’s commercial significance during the Middle Ages. This 14th-century Gothic building originally formed part of the city’s historic riverfront.
The Market Hall was closely associated with commercial activity. It was used for transactions and the storage of goods arriving in Tortosa. Therefore, its existence reflects the city’s role as an important trading centre. Tortosa’s strategic position on the River Ebro was a decisive factor in this commercial development.
In 1933, the building was dismantled stone by stone and moved to Teodor Gonzàlez Municipal Park. In this way, a significant part of this former medieval commercial building was preserved in a new location.
The House of the Giants
Today, the Medieval Market Hall houses the House of the Giants, a space devoted to one of the most representative expressions of Tortosa’s popular culture. Inside are the giants and other figures from Tortosa’s traditional festive bestiary.
Thus, the former commercial building has acquired a new role linked to preserving and promoting local traditions. In addition, the House of the Giants provides an opportunity to discover the characters and figures that feature in some of Tortosa’s most important celebrations.
