Description
The Walk of Cultures Tortosa is an open-air artistic route that invites visitors to discover the history of the city. The itinerary introduces some of Tortosa’s most distinguished historical figures. In addition, the work created by artist Ignasi Blanch crosses one of the most emblematic areas of the old town. In this way, heritage, contemporary art and the urban landscape come together in a cultural experience for all visitors.
Walk of Cultures Tortosa: art and heritage
The route connects the historic Jewish Quarter and the Prince’s Gardens with the apse of Tortosa Cathedral and Suda Castle. Moreover, it follows the route of the former wall walk along the city’s fortifications. Visitors can admire the castle’s imposing defences along the way. At the same time, the itinerary provides different perspectives on the architectural heritage of this part of the city.
The installation consists of fifteen illustrations dedicated to figures from different periods of Tortosa’s history. Thus, the route takes visitors on a journey from ancient times to the 20th century. Among them are Porcia Eufrosina, associated with Roman Dertosa, and Menahem Ben Saruq, an important Hebrew grammarian and lexicographer.
Furthermore, the route features Cristòfor Despuig, one of the leading figures of the Catalan Renaissance, and physician Jaume Ferran i Clua. The latter was a pioneer in the development of a vaccine against cholera.
A journey through Tortosa’s cultural diversity
In addition, the Walk of Cultures Tortosa provides an insight into the cultural diversity that has shaped the city for more than two thousand years. Romans, Jews, Andalusis and Christians all left their mark on Tortosa. In fact, their legacy can still be discovered in the city’s heritage and urban landscape.
At the same time, Ignasi Blanch’s illustrations offer a contemporary interpretation of this historical legacy. For this reason, the route presents history in a visual and engaging way. Moreover, visitors can discover it while walking through a unique part of the historic centre.

Furthermore, the itinerary combines a pleasant walk with the discovery of Tortosa’s monumental heritage. Several of the city’s main attractions are just a few minutes away on foot. These include Suda Castle, Tortosa Cathedral, the Prince’s Gardens and Tortosa Cota 0.
