Description
Teodor Gonzàlez Municipal Park in Tortosa is the city's main green space, located between Avinguda de la Generalitat and the River Ebro. Created during the urban expansion that followed the demolition of the city walls in the late 19th century, it offers a pleasant walk through historic gardens, monumental trees and remarkable heritage landmarks.
Designed by the municipal architect Joan Abril i Guanyabens, the park follows the principles of Romantic landscape gardening. A broad central avenue lined with century-old plane trees contrasts with winding garden paths, ornamental ponds, stairways and shaded corners that invite visitors to relax and explore.
One of the park's most distinctive features is its Modernist staircase and pergola, designed by Pau Monguió in 1921. Flowing balustrades, colourful trencadís mosaic benches and carefully crafted stonework blend harmoniously with the surrounding vegetation, creating one of Tortosa's finest examples of Modernist landscape architecture.
The park is also home to an impressive collection of native and exotic tree species, making it a true urban oasis and one of the city's favourite gathering places throughout the year.
At the northern end of the park stands the Medieval Market Hall, a 14th-century Gothic building that was dismantled and reconstructed stone by stone in its present location in 1933. Originally, it served as Tortosa's commercial exchange and warehouse, reflecting the city's importance as a major trading centre during the Middle Ages.
Today, the Market Hall houses the House of the Giants, where visitors can discover Tortosa's traditional giants and festive bestiary, offering an excellent introduction to one of the city's most distinctive cultural traditions.
