Climent House Tortosa is one of the finest examples of Modernist residential architecture in the city’s historic centre. Located on Montcada Street, one of Tortosa’s most important historic, commercial and social thoroughfares, the building stands out for its slender wooden bay window and richly decorated façade.
Climent House Tortosa: Modernist architecture on Montcada Street
In 1910, pharmacist Ricard Climent Ferrer commissioned master builder Josep Maria Vaquer to design the house. Vaquer created an elegant family residence with a strongly vertical composition, adapted to the dimensions and shape of the plot.
In addition, the building’s corner location allowed this part of the façade to become a prominent architectural feature. As a result, the house makes particularly effective use of its position within the streetscape of Montcada Street.
A spectacular three-storey bay window
The most distinctive feature of Climent House is its three-storey bay window. Built with a wooden structure, it is protected by a metal roof and crowned by a weather vane.
The bay window emphasises the verticality of the building and forms its main visual landmark. At the same time, the combination of wood, metal and decorative details adds a sense of lightness to the composition.
This feature can be clearly appreciated from the street. For this reason, the bay window is one of the most recognisable elements of Modernist architecture in this part of Tortosa’s historic centre.
Sgraffito, wrought iron and floral decoration
The ground floor features a base of dressed stone blocks, providing a solid foundation for the composition. On the upper floors, by contrast, the wrought-iron balconies and decorative sgraffito become the main features.
The sgraffito incorporates stylised plant and floral motifs arranged in geometric patterns. Thus, the decoration combines the Modernist fascination with natural forms with a balanced and elegant composition.
Moreover, the preservation of these features makes it possible to appreciate much of the ornamental richness originally conceived by Josep Maria Vaquer.
A Modernist façade in the historic centre
Climent House is privately owned and does not operate as a tourist attraction. Therefore, its main interest for visitors lies in viewing the façade from Montcada Street.
