Grego House

Grego House, also known as Fontanet House, is one of the finest examples of Modernist architecture in Tortosa and is widely regarded as Pau Monguió i Segura's most accomplished Modernist work in the city. Located on Plaça de la Cinta, beside the Portal del Romeu, it occupies a privileged setting where some of Tortosa's most important historical landmarks stand side by side.

Its location gives the building a unique character. Facing the house is a Baroque gateway, while just a few metres away stands one of the city's surviving medieval entrances. This remarkable combination of medieval, Baroque and Modernist architecture makes the area one of the most distinctive corners of Tortosa's historic centre.

Designed during the early years of the twentieth century, Grego House reflects Pau Monguió's artistic maturity. Unlike many of his other buildings, he moved away from the extensive use of exposed brick, decorative ceramics and geometric compositions, favouring instead a freer and more expressive design dominated by flowing curves and dynamic forms.

The façade is notable for its elegant composition. Its sculpted roofline, continuous balconies and windows of varying shapes create a harmonious yet highly dynamic appearance. Sgraffito decoration, finely crafted woodwork, wrought iron and large glazed surfaces combine to produce a façade in which every decorative element contributes to the overall architectural composition.

The building's most distinctive feature is its magnificent three-storey corner bay window, constructed in timber and glass. Positioned at the corner of the building, it naturally draws the eye and has become one of the most recognisable symbols of Modernist architecture in Tortosa. The quality of its craftsmanship, the elegance of its proportions and the refinement of its details make it a masterpiece of architectural design.

Grego House also represents the period of urban transformation that reshaped Tortosa during the early twentieth century. Modernism introduced a new architectural language in which functionality, beauty and craftsmanship were brought together to create buildings with a distinctive identity. Pau Monguió played a leading role in introducing this style to the city, leaving behind an architectural legacy of exceptional heritage value.

Today, Grego House remains one of the most admired Modernist façades in Tortosa. Its elegant architecture, remarkable corner bay window and outstanding location beside the Portal del Romeu continue to make it one of the city's most iconic landmarks.
