Climent House

Climent House is one of the finest examples of residential Modernist architecture in Tortosa's historic centre. Located on Montcada Street, one of the city's most important historic, commercial and social thoroughfares, the building reflects the prosperity of Tortosa's bourgeoisie in the early 20th century.

In 1910, the pharmacist Ricard Climent Ferrer commissioned the master builder Josep Maria Vaquer to design an elegant family residence with a strongly vertical composition, carefully adapted to the narrow corner plot on which it stands.

The building's most distinctive feature is its impressive three-storey bay window, built with a timber structure, a metal roof and crowned by a weather vane. Positioned on the corner of the building, it dominates the façade and has become one of the architectural landmarks of Montcada Street.

The ground floor is clad in finely cut stone, while the upper levels combine elegant wrought-iron balconies with beautifully preserved sgraffito decoration. Stylised floral and plant motifs, arranged in geometric patterns, illustrate the richness and refinement of Modernist ornamentation.

Although the interior is not open to visitors, it is renowned for its exceptional decorative programme. Floral mural paintings are combined with gilded and polychrome plaster mouldings to create remarkable three-dimensional effects. Decorative faux-marble finishes, stencil-painted motifs and multi-layered sgraffito demonstrate the wide range of artistic techniques employed in the house.

Climent House also reflects the architectural transformation that Tortosa experienced during the early decades of the 20th century. Wealthy local families commissioned homes that combined functionality, social prestige and artistic innovation, inspired by the organic forms of nature.

Today, Climent House remains one of the most recognisable Modernist façades in Tortosa. Its elegant design and carefully crafted decorative details continue to illustrate the architectural quality and artistic ambition that shaped the city's urban development during the early twentieth century.

The timber bay window, wrought-iron balconies and richly decorated façades make Climent House one of the most distinctive buildings on Montcada Street. Its architecture remains an outstanding example of Josep Maria Vaquer's work and one of the finest expressions of Tortosa's Modernist heritage.
